A great experience being able to draw the castle ruins

A lovely performance by Year 1 - reminding us the reason behind the season of Christmas.

We enjoyed linking our topic work on castles.

What an exciting term ahead we have in Year One

What are we learning in English?

In English we are learning all about Castles and Dragons. We will be reading the book George and the Dragon by Chris Wormell. Our focus will be to thinking of a sentence and saying it aloud before we write it down using the sounds we know. We are also working hard to remember capital letters and to leavefinger spaces between words. We will be continuing to read and spell our weekly high frequency words.

What are we learning in Maths?

In Mathematics we are looking at 2D and 3D shape. We will also be learning to count, read and write numbers to 20 and using addition and subtraction to solve number problems.

What are learning in RE?

Within RE we are currently studying the topic Prayers, Saints and Feasts where we will be looking at how and why we pray, who is a Saint and what we can learn from them. We will also be learning about the Liturgical Calendar and events that happen through theyear.

What are we learning within our topic?

Over the next half term our topic will have a history focus.  We will be learning to understand the historical terms past, present and future.  We will be finding out about what life was like for King Arthur and most exciting of all visiting a real castle.

What are we learning in Computing ?

In Computing we will be learning to use recording equipment to record sounds and develop skills in solving and storing sounds on the computer.

Special dates:

PE on a Wednesday  afternoon. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school. During the cold weather they may prefer long trousers rather than shorts. All children must have appropriate footwear and long hair needs to be tied back

Home Reading

As part of our drive to develop children’s independent reading skills we encourage parents to read with their child every day. When reading with your child we ask that you spend time discussing the content of the book i.e the characters, setting, what happened at different points in the story. We also need to encourage children to identify what type of book they are reading and how they know this i.e fiction or non-fiction. When you are reading with your child please record the page numbers you have read in their home school reading record so we know when your child is ready to change their book.

Homework

Spellings will be given on a Monday due in the following Friday – the children have to learn the spellings as well as write them into a sentence.
