English

During this half term Year 1 will be doing all their English through the novel – Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers.

We will be exploring the story through role play and drama.

Grammar skills to be taught this half term:

Beginning to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark

Leaving spaces between words

Reading skills to be taught this half term:

Apply phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words

Respond speedily with the correct sound to graphemes (letters or groups of letters) for all 40+ phonemes, including, where applicable, alternative sounds for graphemes

Listening to and discussing a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction at a level beyond that at which they can read independently

Predicting what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far

 

Maths

During maths this half term we will be looking at Place Value, and exploring numbers to 100. The children will be following Inspire maths to ensure that they are able to use their skills throughout many different situations.Maths Around the World will be every Friday, and we are aiming high in Year 1. We would like to see everyone completing several countries this year!

RE

During Autumn we will be looking at the Topic Creation, in this unit the children will be thinking about God’s Creation and how different ways we can look after God’s creation.

  • Children will be able to retell the story of Creation
  • Children will be able to ask and respond to questions about how God wants us to feel about creation
  • Children will be able to recognise and describe that Christians thank God for his creation

Computing

During this half term the children will be decoding programmes. Children will be able to:

  • Understand a programmable toy can be controlled by inputting a sequence of instructions
  • Develop and record sequence of instructions as an algorithm.
  • Program a toy to follow their algorithm
  • Debug my program
  • Predict how my program will work.

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD – GEOGRAPHY

We will be linking our Geography through our Core Text Lost and Found.

Geography Skills 

  • Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage.
  • Identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom.
  • School and World Maps
  • Seasonal/daily weather patterns in the UK and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the equator and the North and South poles.

Geography NC Objectives:

  • Seasonal/daily weather patterns in the UK and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the equator and the North and South poles.
  • Devise simple picture maps.
  • Begin to use aerial photographs and photographs to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features.
  • Use locational and directional language (e.g., near and far, left and right). Describe the location of features and routes on maps.

Seasonal Changes

Key Concepts:

  • Seasonal Changes - Observe changes across the four seasons
  • Observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.

PE kits should be left in school for the half term to ensure that the children have their kits whenever we do PE

Wednesday afternoon is our PE coaching day, but we may do PE on other days.

TRIPS: Local walk around the school to observe different weather changes.
