At St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that all children should be given the opportunity to be a part of a musically rich environment through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We aim to deliver a high quality Music curriculum, taught by a music specialist, which inspires pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world of music and how it can have an impact on a person’s life in many ways. Children are taught a rich and varied vocabulary to describe and explain the inter-related musical dimensions of music. We provide many performance opportunities and experiences to inspire and motivate children to learn. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop their musical potential and we aim to nurture and encourage musical development across the school.
Each year group receives music lessons every week delivered by the school's Music Teacher. Usually, every year group has a different instrumental or musical genre focus alongside key skill objectives taken from the national curriculum. However, due to the current COVID-19 situation, we have adapted our music curriculum to ensure that we comply with the new government guidance. For example, we will not be singing indoors or sharing certain instruments.
Children start their musical learning as soon as they start in Early Years, working on a variety of musical skills that will really provide the building blocks for their musical journey all the way to Year 6. They have an opportunity to experience a wide variety of musical instruments and musical styles. We offer many opportunities for children to develop their talents in all aspects of music including composition, singing and appreciation across many musical genres.
The school has close connections with Portsmouth Music Hub. Throughout the year we are offered free opportunities to take part in numerous music events across Portsmouth. For example, watching live music performances at the Portsmouth Guildhall, ranging from the jazz and blues band ‘The Jive Aces’ to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
